Finding a used car

It can sometimes be hard to know where or how to start the search for your next car. At Acton AutoSales, we have almost 50 years experience in the motor trade and have put together our top tips to help you make the search much easier.

Before heading out it’s good to have an idea of what you’re looking for, or a list of priorities that will narrow down your search and save you valuable time.

Price or Budget

There are literally thousands of used cars of all prices in the market place and we recommend you consider your budget before setting out, how much do you want to spend and if you’re financing the car through the dealer how much per month are you happy to pay.

Size of the vehicle and of the engine are two of the most important factors. Decide the overall size of the car you need including how many seats you want and how big you want the engine to be. Do you want a larger car that is high off the ground, or something that is easy to manoeuvre, would you like a manual or automatic gearbox. Narrowing down your search in this way will make the final choice easier.

Age and Mileage

It is good to have an idea of the age of the car you’re looking for and how many miles you want the car to have done. If you’re going to put a lot of miles on the car you may be looking for something with relatively low mileage. Work on an average of 10,000 to 12,000 miles per annum to calculate if the car you are considering has done a high or low mileage for its age.

You should always bear in mind what you want to use the car for. If you will be using it to commute to work, you may be looking for a very different vehicle than if you were getting a car to tow a large caravan. In reality of course most people are looking for a car which is versatile enough to fulfil several roles in its life and this clearly makes choosing the right one harder so take your time and see how many of your boxes the car ticks.
